Andrew T. Zidel, an associate, is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Zidel has over eight years of research and industrial experience in electrical engineering, specializing in wireless communications and related technologies. Mr. Zidel is a named inventor in multiple United States patents. His practice encompasses patent related work in the electrical, software and mechanical arts, including patent drafting, prosecution of filed applications, litigation support and opinion work. Mr. Zidel's practice also includes trademark, domain name and licensing matters.
He successfully argued appeals before the USPTO's Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences on behalf of Sony
Corporation for wireless accounting systems for music distribution. Mr. Zidel was part of the legal team for Sony in the largest patent case ever brought, involving a total of 58 patents against Eastman Kodak Company. He presented oral argument for claim construction for one of Sony's digital camera-related patents during a Markman hearing in New York federal court.
He is the author of "Patent Claim Construction in the Trial Courts: A Study Showing the need for Clear Guidance from the Federal Circuit," 33 Seton Hall L. Rev. 711 (2003), which has been cited in numerous articles on claim construction.
Mr. Zidel is co-chair of the firm's internal Claim Construction Committee, which regularly updates practitioners on recent developments on claim construction issues.
Mr. Zidel has prosecuted and has obtained allowance on patents in many technology areas, including recent patents on computer architectures and equipment, MPEG decoding, as well as patents for innovative shoe configurations and designs. Mr. Zidel has also been involved in patent studies concerning multimedia content identification and matching as well as wireless Voice Over IP applications.
